Congratulations...

Yesterday I woke to the online news that my favourite celebrity couple and the biggest power duo in the music world, Jay Z and Beyonce, had welcomed their new baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter, into the world.

Amid uncertainty of the baby's real name (was it Blue Ivy or Ivy Blue?) I found myself intrigued to discover the meaning behind the name. Rumours suggest that the I and V in Ivy makes the number 4 in Roman numerals and is said to not only be the name of Beyonce's latest album, but also Jay Z's favourite number. Coincidence? Surely not.

I personally believe there is a lot in a name and very few people these days seem to rationalise their choice by simply saying "we just liked it" but rather a much deeper explanation usually follows. With that being said, as much as I laugh at some of the celebrity baby names floating around these days, with the likes of Morocco and Monroe, Harper Seven, Bronx, Honor, Apple, Mason Dash, Egypt and now Blue, the story behind the names I find are just as interesting as the names themselves.

On my way into work this morning, I heard a clip from the song Jay Z wrote for his new baby daughter, titled Glory. The few lines I heard sent shivers down my spine. The lyrics are divine and matched with Jay Z's supreme producing skills, I fell in love with the song from start to finish. Glory features a recording of Blue's first cries as she enters the world and the track is perhaps one of the most amazing gifts a father could give to his new daughter.

You can hear Glory on Jay Z's website Life + Time, or read the lyrics below...

GLORY

The most amazing feeling I feel
Words can’t describe the feeling for real
Baby I paint the sky blue
My greatest creation was you, you
Glory

Ooooh Glory
False alarms and false starts (ugh)
All made better by the sound of your heart (yeah)
All the pain of the last time
I prayed so hard it was the last time
Your mamma said that you danced for her

Did you wiggle your hands for her?
Glory, Glory, Glory, Sorry

Everything that I prayed for
God’s gift, I wish I would’ve prayed more
God makes no mistakes, I made a few
Rough sledding here and there, but I made it through
I wreak havoc on the world, get ready for part 2
A younger, smarter, faster me
So a pinch of Hov, a whole glass of Béy
Glory
The most amazing feeling I feel
Words can’t describe what I’m feeling for real
Baby I paint the sky blue
My greatest creation was you
Your grand pop died, a nigga fell yeh
Then he died of liver failure
Deep down he was a good man
God damn, I can’t deliver failure
Bad ass Lil Hov
2 years old, shopping on Savile Row
Wicked ass lil B
Hard not to spoil you rotten looking like little me
The most beautifulest thing in this world
Daddy’s little girl
You don’t yet know what swag is
But you was made in Paris
And mama woke up the next day and shot her album package
Last time the miscarriage was so tragic
We was afraid you disappeared
But nah, baby you magic (voilà)
So there you have it, shit happens
Make sure the plane you on is bigger than your carry on baggage
Everybody goes through stuff
Life is a gift love, open it up
You’re a child of destiny
You’re the child of my destiny
You’re my child with the child from Destiny’s Child
That’s a hell of a recipe
Glory, Glory, Glory, Sorry

Irrespective of her name, baby Blue is no doubt going to grow into an incredibly beautiful, talented and fortunate little girl, and as the world watches, surely, so will I.
