Christmas Craziness...

From hot, sunny Adelaide, I wish all my readers and those just passing through a very Merry Christmas, filled with love, laughter, happiness and a special gift under the tree with your name on it.

This year, like every other, my lunch time will be spent with my mother's side of the family, for a quiet and civilized meal, followed by a much faster paced and rather hectic dinner with my father's family.

Christmas dinner is always filled with a household full of noise, cousin catch-ups and of course, as is the case with many Greek families...a cast of thousands. Yes, Christmas night is where approximately 40-50 of my closest relatives come together for an evening involving more presents, more food and visit from our very own Father Christmas, followed by an always entertaining Christmas concert, where each family is required to prepare and present a musical item to be judged by Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson...or in other words, the eldest and less mobile members of the family. None of us have any musical talent what-so-ever (we were clearly not blessed with rhythmic genes) so there is never any pressure to perform at a high standard, but rather the most 'entertaining' (and I use that term loosely), family generally wins.

It is a tradition which I've come to realise is quite unique, but one which I can't imagine being omitted from our Christmas celebrations. So wherever you are in the world, I hope you are reliving your yearly festive traditions and are surrounded by those you love, which is of course the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas Party Etiquette...

The most reoccurring words in my diary these past few weeks have been 'Christmas Party', but one in particular, held earlier in the week absolutely took the cake. It was a great night, full of laughs, karaoke and alcohol induced shenanigans, which left me wondering why people would choose to get completely out of control at a work function?

Some people I'm convinced arrive with the aim of:
a) embarrassing themselves;
b) creating a talking point for the next 12 months; and
c) to see how much free alcohol they can consume throughout the course of the event.
All roads in these instances lead to disaster and a guaranteed awkward Monday morning 'walk of shame' in the office.

So why, I ask, would someone put themselves through that sort of embarrassment and all the repercussions that go along with it? Sure, it's easy to blame alcohol, but to me, the prospect of loosing my job or being reconsidered for a possible promotion because of a few sneaky Moscato's is enough to keep me in the clear and away from trouble. To me, there's a time and a place to be a free spirit, but in front of your boss or company board members is perhaps not the best alternative.

With that being said, following our own Christmas Party and having witnessed some questionable behaviour, my colleague and I came up with a sure fire list of do's and don'ts to get you through your next work function relatively unscathed...

DONT' wear a revealing wardrobe, more suitable for a nightclub...

DON'T break it down on the dance floor as if it were your bedroom...

DON'T engage in a random hook-up with a colleague...

DON'T drink so much that you can't see straight...

DON'T let this be you at the end of the night...

...and by following these tips, on Monday you won't have to hide your face!

Most Fascinating People...

As always, Barbara Walters 10 Most Fascinating People for 2011 list did not disappoint, with Steve Jobbs taking out the number 1 spot. Walters and her US ABC team responsible for the annual television event have maintained the rule that all featured people must be alive. However, when Steve Jobbs, Creative Director and CEO of Apple, retired earlier in the year, Walters knew he would make the cut, but unfortunately their interview never eventuated.

At first, I thought a few of the people chosen for the list were questionable. Katy Perry has had a successful year, but I didn't think she had achieved anything extraordinary? Modern Family is a hilarious show, but it failed to receive the notoriety or fan-fare of shows like Glee. And while Simon Cowell remains an entertainment visionary, he has for decades now been on our television screens judging and identifying raw talent. So what was it, I thought, that made these people so fascinating to Walters in 2011 specifically?

After watching the interviews, I understood her rationale and was impressed with the angle she'd taken with each story. It wasn't the people that were fascinating, but rather their experiences, life story or the unexpected impact they have had on society which to her, and many of us, makes them interesting.

However, not enough can be said about Steve Jobbs. The man is pure genius and has revolutionised the way that we view, use and understand technology. He drafted the idea of the ipad before the technology even existed, and slowly, as society developed new techniques and advanced processes, he was able to unveil the inventions once outlined on paper which now provide a valuable function in today's world.

I've Got A Crush...

...on Olivia Palermo!

She played a not-so-nice version of herself on the reality show The City but there's just something about Olivia Palermo that's caught my eye...and apparently the rest of the world. Since the finale of the show in 2010, her celebrity status has continued to grow with regular seats at fashion week, designer endorsements and a position on Diane von Furstenberg's NYC-based team.

While the socialites life has been surrounded by controversy, there's no going past her flare for fashion and enviable wardrobe. With H&M and TopShop listed as two of her favourite places to indulge, Olivia mixes high street fashion with designer labels and creates vogue-like ensembles for the every-day girl to admire and replicate.

I've Got A Crush...

...on Atlantic Pacific.

The day I stumbled across Blair Eadie's fashion blog, I virtually kissed my afternoon goodbye, as I couldn't help but trawl through her extensive collection of posts, continuously clicking the 'next' button.

Blair is just like any young woman with an eye for fashion, except she's one of those people- the fashion forward types who would rather set trends instead of follow them.

Some of the combinations she comes up with I would never consider, but when accessorised in the unique 'Atlantic Pacific' way that she does, the result is wearable, fashionable and practical daily wardrobes. Unlike many fashion blogs, Blair has an incredible knack for throwing together high end items with low budget look-alikes and perhaps whats most refreshing is the fact that you see the same pieces repeated countless times but presented in a fresh, new way.

So I ask the question- what's not to love? Well, Vogue Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour agrees and had Blair featured in her infamous September Issue as a fashion inspiration for the 'every day' woman. She's also featured on the fashion site WhoWhatWear and is a guest writer on countless other blogs.

So if you've got an hour or so to kill or you're just in the mood for a little fashion fix, then I think Atlantic Pacific is a good place to start...

Dear Santa...

In preparation for Christmas last year, I posted a few practical ideas to use as Stocking Fillers- a concept that has certainly been embraced in the US and in my opinion should be more enthusiastically adopted here in Australia.

No matter which state of America you shop in, checkout registers are always overflowing with beautiful and tempting gift ideas. It's the same concept as that sneaky chocolate bar selection under the service station counter and that little shopping devil on my shoulder always manages to justify an unplanned purchase or two.

So this year I've decided to update my stocking stuffer list with items which can be used for a Kris Kringle gift, as an addition to an 'almost there' gift idea or as a little gesture to present to your hosts at the next Christmas dinner party...

[ My sisters and I are big fans (and consumers)
of Cat Hammill Jewellery and one of my
favourite pieces in her new collection is the
Amalfi Bracelet set of 3- $59.95 ]

[ For the friend who loves to entertain...and have a
beverage or two, why not educate them on the art inside
the glass with The Little Black Book of Cocktails ]

[ Lets be honest, who doesn't like sitting back
and watching a movie on the big screen?
A movie voucher is the gift that will never disappoint ]

[ Adelaide finest and most tempting chocolate-
Haighs Giant Chocolate Frog- $21.50 ]

[ Inglot Nail polish in my favourite colour of ALL time- #711 ]

[ If you're like me and have slight heart palpitations when you
visit an Officeworks store, you're sure to LOVE just about everything
stocked in Kikki K, like this letter rack- $34.95 ]

[ In need of a travel makeup brush set? Look no
further than this MAC pack- $49.50 ]

[ The perfect 'emerency' bag, this Mimco mesh wallet comes
in various colours and is on sale for $29.96 ]

[ After smelling this scent on my friend the other
day, it's shot right to the top of my next
fragrance purchase.
Miss Dior Cherie au de Parfum 100ml- $126.50
on strawberrynet ]

[ This Model Co. lip gloss was given to me as a gift
and I instantly fell in love. Purely out of fear that
they'll discontinue the Pink Sea Shell line, I've purchased
2 back-ups...just in case. It's seriously that good! ]

[ A girl can never have enough statement
bracelets and this Vince Camuto bracelet found on
gifts.com is perfect ]

[ These leather bound diaries and journals sell
themselves. Divine. ]

[ If you're in the market for a gift that smells
utterly delicious, be sure to head to
Adelaide Flower House where you can
find gorgeous scented candles, reed defusers
and unique gifts for the home ]

[ Diptyque Candle- various prices and sizes ]

[ The perfect addition to any book collection, this series of
F Scott Fitzgerald Penguin hardbacks are so beautiful,
you'll want the whole series ]

And if I were an illegitimate Kardashian sister, I think my Christmas list would look something like this...

[ A Hermes Birkin- either colour would do ]

[ A trip to Las Vegas to see Cher perform live at
Caesar's Palace ]

[ A Diane Von Furstenberg laptop case ]
